Oh Banquet Not by Thomas Moore was set to the tune Planxty Irwin written by Ireland’s most famous harper Turlough O’Carolan here arranged for voice and guitar by Simon James. Because the tune is so beautiful the first page is a guitar solo incorporating the tune before the voice joins in. Like much of Moore’s poetry there is a sadness to the words imbued with the sadness of Ireland’s turbulent history. I recorded this and two other Irish songs with the splendid baritone Michael Hickman and you can find them on YouTube.
